Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

Afternoon Slump Got You Down? There’s A Nap For That

There’s a reason you, like clockwork, feel sluggish when 3 p.m. rolls around each day. Scientists call it the circadian dip, and it happens because our bodies regulate periods of wakefulness and sleepiness, the latter of which peaks for most adults during the nighttime hours of 2 and 4 a.m., and the daytime hours of 1 and 3 p.m.

The good news? There’s an easy solution. We’ve partnered with Sleep Number to get to the bottom of the #PowerOfSleep. Check out the video below to learn more.

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Sleep Number® beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support — your Sleep Number® setting. Pregntale al mexicano! (Spanish Edition)

DEAR MEXICAN: WHAT IS ASK A MEXICAN! ? Questions and answers about our spiciest Americans. I explore the clichs of lowriders, busboys, and housekeepers; drunks and scoundrels; heroes and celebrities; and most important, millions upon millions of law-abiding, patriotic American citizens and their illegal-immigrant cousins who represent some 0 billion in economic power. WHY SHOULD I READ ASK A MEXICAN! ? At 37 million strong (or 13 percent of the U.S. population), Latinos have become America’s largest minority — and beaners make up some two-thirds of that number. I confront the bogeymen of racism, xenophobia, and ignorance prompted by such demographic changes through answering questions put to me by readers of my Ask a Mexican! column in California’s OC Weekly. I challenge you to find a more entertaining way to immerse yourself in Mexican culture that doesn’t involve a taco-and-enchilada combo. OKAY, WHY DO MEXICANS PARK THEIR CARS ON THE FRONT LAWN? Where do you want us to park them? The garage we rent out to a family of five? The backyard where we put up our recently immigrated cousins in tool-shack-cum-homes? The street with the red curbs recently approved by city planners? The driveway covered with construction materials for the latest expansion of la casa? The nearby school parking lot frequented by cholos on the prowl for a new radio? The lawn is the only spot Mexicans can park their cars without fear of break-ins, drunken crashes, or an unfortunate keying. B

Italian Party Leader Catches Heat For Likening Female Lawmaker To Sex Doll

ROME (Reuters) ― The outspoken leader of Italy’s anti-immigrant Northern League party drew a chorus of criticism on Monday for comparing the woman speaker of the lower house of parliament to an inflatable sex doll.

While Matteo Salvini addressed the crowd at a rally near the northern city of Cremona on Saturday, a blow-up doll was held up by supporters behind him.

“Boldrini’s clone is here on the stage,” Salvini said, referring to lower house speaker Laura Boldrini. He gave no explanation why he made the comparison.

The remark was greeted with raucous laughter among the crowd but roundly condemned by politicians from across the political spectrum after appearing on YouTube and social media on Monday.

The Northern League leader often targets Boldrini, who comes from a small left-wing party, because of her appeals for humane treatment for immigrants. Before being elected to parliament, she was Italy’s spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

“Salvini misses no opportunity for insults and vulgarity but with this rally he has passed every limit of decency,” said Emanuele Fiano, a prominent deputy for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s Democratic Party (PD).

Maria Elena Boschi, minister for constitutional reforms, accused Salvini of “squalid sexism” which she said offended not only Boldrini but all Italian men and women.

According to recent opinion polls, the right-wing Northern League is Italy’s third most popular party, with about 13-14 percent of voting support, behind the PD and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, both on around 30 percent.

Asked by Sky Italia television if he planned to apologize, Salvini replied: “You must be joking, it’s Boldrini who should apologize because she is a racist towards Italians.” Earlier on Monday he tweeted that Boldrini should resign and, in clear reference to the blow-up doll, launched the hashtag “deflate Boldrini”.

The Big Idea Behind Integrative Medicine

2016-07-25-1469470698-7845448-Hippocrates.jpg

Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity.

Hippocrates

Integrative medicine is an ecosystem of support for pursuing your own health and well-being. Inside that ecosystem is someone who cares about you.
Integrative medicine is emerging from a successful history of treating physical ailments that often eluded Western modalities of care to become an ecosystem of support for health and wellness. Possibly the most visible sign of this development is the increasing attention of integrative medicine to primary care, where prevention and regard for the whole person is most critical.

What distinguishes integrative medicine as an approach is that it distances itself from the traditional model of a patient dependent on an expert. Rather, it embraces a genuine clinical partnership in which both the patient and the care provider have something to offer in pursuit of the patient’s optimal health. The care provider embodies not only clinical knowledge, which is the result of his or her training, but also qualities not always associated with experts. These include curiosity, emotional support, collaboration, humor, and the ability to articulate options and alternatives without judgment. Patients are participants as well, offering knowledge of what has worked for them in the past, providing information that can’t be quantified on a medical report, and finding meaning and purpose in their response to the challenges faced when confronted by illness.

The power of integrative medicine comes from acknowledging the multiple dimensions that can cause illness and an equal respect for the various modalities that can address healing and cure. Freed from a traditional repertoire of either pharmacological or surgical solutions (pills or knife), integrative medicine practitioners have expanded the treatment landscape to include nutrition, bodywork, chiropractic, mindfulness-based stress reduction, integrative psychotherapy, and ancient healing practices such as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. From exploring the optimal chemistry for our digestive tract to treating autoimmune conditions to finding novel ways to address trauma, integrative medicine is showing us a whole new way to educate ourselves about health and take responsibility for our own well-being.

The emerging field of integrative care is as much an idea as a set of practices. The idea is of an ecosystem of support, an intersecting set of relationships that address the whole human package — body, mind, heart, and soul. And at the center of this ecosystem of support are people who care about you. The ability to be seen by a team of providers and staff who value you as a whole person is a central premise permeating all other techniques and practices.

I am reminded of the support that the poet W.H. Auden gave Dr. Oliver Sacks when he was composing Awakenings, a book about his work with a group of patients who had been in a decades-long sleep and were now coming back to consciousness. Auden wrote: “You’re going to have to go beyond the clinical. … Be metaphorical, be mystical, be whatever you need.” I find here the implication that it is our deep regard for the human condition that moves us beyond the complacent and routine. It is in our profound respect for service to others that we touch mystery and wholeness. At the heart of integrative medicine is a bold invitation to go beyond the clinical, into regions that capture our hearts and imagination. Caring is fundamental. Nothing else really matters without love as an organizing principle. Or as one patient I know told her physician, “I just want someone who gives a damn.”

Caring relationships can and should be with our care providers, but they must also be evident in our social networks, our family, and our community, and in our relationship with nature. Beyond the particular type of care we receive is a broader view of health that includes the social and relational. Caring is about how we manifest love in the form of looking out for each other, witnessing, supporting, provoking, and optimizing our capacity to face health and illness, life and death, with dignity. Wise old Hippocrates had it right: Where the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.

I had the opportunity to talk about all this with Dr. Jeff Draisin, co-medical director of the Institute for Health and Healing. IHH operates a network of clinics in Northern California and has pioneered integrative medicine practice there for nearly 25 years. Here are seven distinctions he articulated about the emerging field of integrative care. I think he captures something here of essence, particular themes that direct our attention to what matters most and the attributes that together make a whole.

Integrative care does the following:

  • It shifts our understanding of care from a focus on illness and shortcomings to a focus on well-being, personal growth, and transformation.
  • It cares for the whole person by addressing mind, body, and spirit as three interacting elements that together result in health and well-being.
  • It helps individuals craft healthy relationships with their physical bodies, mental outlook, and emotional well-being. Beyond fitness and exercise is the relationship we have with our whole self.
  • It treats nutrition — what we put in our body — as medicine. Beyond diets and supplements is an understanding of what helps our body to feel vital and how best to decrease the effects of toxins.
  • It embraces the latest discoveries of neuroscience and mind-related health for personal well-being — from mindfulness stress reduction to the benefits of awe and wonder.
  • It creates a true partnership that joins the best of Western medicine with ancient healing traditions and complementary modalities. The guiding intent is to restore harmony and address imbalances that detract from optimal health.
  • It values psychological and spiritual forces as food for the soul. Feeling valued, having purpose, and finding meaning are all essential elements of healing and health.

If we pursue health practices and policies along these lines, we will transform health care and bring the art of caring into the heart of medicine.

California City Bans Deceptive Ads By Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Clinics

OAKLAND, Calif. ― The city council here has tightened regulations around pregnancy clinics that try to fool prospective patients with advertisements falsely suggesting that they perform abortions.

The ordinance, passed last week, makes Oakland the second U.S. city to target advertising by so-called crisis pregnancy centers that mask an anti-abortion agenda, according to organizations promoting abortion rights. San Francisco passed a similar ordinance in 2011.

Some such clinics have used billboards and online ads to trick women into thinking that they perform abortions or offer other emergency contraceptive care, according to Amy Everitt, NARAL Pro-Choice California director. She said she’s troubled that searching Google for information about abortions in Oakland brings up results for nearby centers that don’t provide the service.

“When women are seeking reproductive health care, it is time-sensitive and urgent,” said Everitt. “When you put an entity or organization in the way that’s specifically targeting them to deceive them into wasting their time and delay them from accessing other care, what that creates for the women and families of California is a public harm.”

Anti-abortion centers, also known as limited-service pregnancy centers, outnumber Planned Parenthood’s 115 clinics in California, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman said. An exact count is difficult because many centers are not registered with authorities, and they often change names. A list compiled by California ProLife Council includes 190 crisis pregnancy centers.

The problem extends to websites that include inaccurate medical information about pregnancies, or that overstate the dangers of abortions and the morning-after pill. Oakland officials representing city council and the city attorney highlighted passages on OptionOnline.org, which refers women to crisis pregnancy centers in the Bay Area, as the kind of misleading medical advice that might run afoul of the law.

“Many pregnancies result in miscarriage so an abortion might not be necessary,” the website says. Another passage warns that the Plan B and emergency contraception pills “can actually hurt you if you take them while you are pregnant.”

Violators can be fined and sued by Oakland’s city attorney if they refuse to take down contested ads.

Support Circle, a licensed medical clinic with three sites in the Bay Area, including one in Oakland, is one facility that has relied on deceptive advertising to shade its anti-abortion stance, according to Oakland officials.

“Support Circle is a safe place where you can sort out your thoughts and feelings in a non-pressured environment, and make healthy, well-informed choices in line with your core values,” the clinic website says. The organization counsels against abortion.

“Clients can meet with medical professionals and receive information about early pregnancy symptoms, the morning after pill, abortion, the abortion pill, emergency contraception, Plan B, Ella, pregnancy and drugs, pregnancy and smoking, pregnancy and alcohol, and miscarriage,” the Support Circle website continues.

Support Circle did not respond to The Huffington Post’s inquiries.

A conservative legal organization that has represented crisis pregnancy centers said Oakland’s new law is flawed. The ordinance assumes women don’t research the services offered at crisis pregnancy centers before going to one, said Brad Dacus, Pacific Justice Institute president.

“My fear is that abortion clinics like Planned Parenthood will succeed in achieving their end goal that women in crises will not receive compassionate counseling to alternatives and that more women will abort their unborn babies,” Dacus said. He said the law was motivated by Planned Parenthood’s desire for more customers.

County health officials encouraged Oakland to pass the law, saying crisis pregnancy centers interfere with prenatal care in other ways. Some of the clinics target residents of low-income neighborhoods and force women to transfer to doctors and clinics 20 weeks to 24 weeks into their pregnancies, when it’s too late to obtain an abortion, according to a June letter from Alameda County Public Health Department officials. Doctors and clinics that pick up these patients have complained that the crisis pregnancy centers delay sharing critical lab results and other medical records, according to the letter.

“We do not have the resources to compete with the misleading advertising of the crisis pregnancy centers,” the letter says.

San Francisco’s law was challenged by an anti-abortion center that contended it violated free speech rights. A federal judge upheld the ordinance in 2015, saying commercial speech can be regulated.

“Oakland respects the activists’ right to express their views and counsel against abortion. If their message is truly compelling, they should have no problem being honest about what they do and do not offer,” City Attorney Barbara Parker said in a statement. “If they refuse to be honest, the City Attorney will have the power to sue violators to hold them accountable.”

The Velveteen Father: An Unexpected Journey to Parenthood

The Velveteen Father: An Unexpected Journey to Parenthood

Journalist Jesse Green’s delightful memoir makes it quite clear that the pleasures and perils of parenting are always the same–even for a gay 37-year-old man who stumbles into it by falling in love with a person who has an adopted son. As Green puts it in a typically well-turned phrase, “fatherhood trumps gayness,” which is to say that heterosexual parents at the playground sometimes find it easier to relate to Green, his boyfriend, Andy, and son, Erez (soon joined by baby brother Lucas), than do the well-buffed, perennially youthful male guests at a Fire Island party–they flinch at the sight of diapers and baby bags. As the author searchingly and intelligently considers what it means to gay people to become parents, and the ways in which it does and does not pull them closer into the mainstream, his narrative is often extremely funny. (Joking about Erez’s apparently heterosexual inclinations, Green deadpans, “We tried our best: We played him Judy Garland records and showed him tapes of West Side Story.”) A very moving examination of identity and the making of a meaningful adult life that resonates profoundly for people of every sexual orientation. –Wendy Smith

When her grades start to slip, Evie’s parents threaten to cancel her party. The good news? All she has to do is volunteer in the community to raise her grades. The bad news? Fake Melania Trump Offers Hilarious Defense Of RNC Speech On ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’

Did the 2016 election season just find its Tina Fey?

Actress/singer Laura Benanti nailed the part of Melania Trump on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday night, offering a comically inept defense against accusations of plagiarism.

In making her point, she then plagiarized everyone from Charles Dickens to Dr. Seuss to a McDonald’s commercial.

Check it out in the clip above, and see if you don’t start ba-da-ba-ba lovin’ it.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

How To Collaborate Like Todd Snyder, Rising King Of American Menswear

He’s the once and future king of American menswear. But unless you’re obsessed with Instagram’s growing brotherhood of style bloggers who wear his clothes, you might not know Todd Snyder’s name today ― a fact that he’s OK with (for now) and he’ll be the first to admit that he’s not an American household name … yet.

But after designing outerwear at Polo Ralph Lauren, working as the director of menswear at The Gap and then as senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew (where he launched the Ludlow suit and its NYC-destination menswear shop The Liquor Store), he left J.Crew to launch his eponymous label. Snyder has been “The Next Big Thing” for so long that it feels like Snyder (a Dutch surname that, as it happens, means “tailor”) is finally getting the respect, attention and success that he deserves.

In 2012, Snyder, who cites military, Savile Row and classic American style as big inspiration, was GQ’s Best New Designer in America. A year later, he was a finalist for the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund. Last year, American Eagle announced (to some surprise) that it had acquired the Todd Snyder label, as well as Snyder’s lesser-known brand, Tailgate, for $ 11 million.

He told HuffPost that he plans to open a Todd Snyder shop in Manhattan (his first brick and mortar in the US) that will feature, among other things, a barber shop, tailor shop and bar, in the hopes of bringing the success he’s found in his Japanese locations to his home base in the U.S.

A big reason for all of this success, though slow-simmering, is due to his ability to recognize partnerships where others would see competition. Snyder has designed product with brands that share both aesthetics and customers: PF Flyers, Champion, Superior bags, Moscot and Cole Haan. His most recent collaboration with Timex sold out within its first day.

We spoke with Snyder in his Manhattan studio to learn about why he collaborates so much when he could just do for himself what other brands are doing, to learn his secrets.

Associate Yourself With Those Who Inspire You.

“What attracted me to Timex was the heritage,” Snyder said. “When I think of iconic American brands, it’s Levis, Champion, Timex, Redwing. Those are the things that, to me are like OK, that says they’ve stood the test of time. They’re still doing today what they were doing when they started, which is making really great quality design.”

Your Competitor Can Become Your Mentor.

“It’s also the ability to sit across from [a brand like] Timex, where within the entire company, there’s a lot of really smart people. They’re talking about marketing and different ways of getting the word out and I’m like, how do you do that? They deal with mega companies, the Targets of the world. Everybody. To be able to sit across from people in that company who have this knowledge is, for me, so exciting because then I learn from that.”

Respect Your Partner’s History. It’s Why You Want To Work With Them.

“To be able to work with companies like those is a dream come true, but my approach is to go in with respect to the heritage and what they’ve built,” Snyder said. “I don’t want to change it, I just want to add a little twist to it and really pay tribute to it, as opposed to starting over. Because to me, that’s not what it’s about ― it’s about taking something they’ve done and adding slight twists to it so it kind of makes it my own, but at the same time doesn’t destroy what they’ve started. And having that appreciation goes a long way so they can trust me. It’s a trust factor.”

Know That Ultimately, What You Make Together Is More Meaningful Than The Sum Of Its Parts.

I don’t think I could ever make a watch better than Timex, and if I did I don’t think it would have as much meaning as something like this,” Snyder said. “Because that’s what people appreciate; you fall in love with the design and you might not know that it was made originally in 1970 but you start to read the backstory on the watch and how it was started and the story about how it was designed, and you fall in love with that story as well. And I think that’s what guys really appreciate. There’s more substance to it rather than just a piece of metal that’s on your wrist.”

Florida Zika Case Could Be First Local Transmission In U.S.

(Reuters) – Florida health officials said on Tuesday they are investigating a case of Zika virus infection that does not appear to have stemmed from travel to another region with an outbreak.

The statement from the Florida Department of Health did not specify whether the Zika case was believed to have been transmitted via mosquito bite, sexual contact or other means.

The department said the case was reported in Miami-Dade County and that it is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on an epidemiological study.

The department also reiterated guidance to Florida residents on protecting themselves from mosquitoes that may carry the virus.

“Zika prevention kits and repellant will be available for pickup … and distributed in the area under investigation,” the health department said in a statement. “Mosquito control has already conducted reduction and prevention activities in the area of investigation.”

Zika, which can cause a rare birth defect and other neurological conditions, has spread rapidly through the Americas. A small number of cases of Zika transmitted between sexual partners have also been documented.

There has yet to be a case of local transmission by mosquitoes in the continental United States, though more than 1,300 people in the country have reported infections after traveling to a Zika outbreak area.

U.S. officials have predicted local outbreaks to begin as the weather warms, particularly in southern states such as Florida and Texas.

Sydney Schanberg, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist Who Inspired The Movie ‘The Killing Fields,’ Dead At 82

July 9 (Reuters) – Sydney Schanberg, a former correspondent whose Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the fall of Cambodia to the Khmer Rouge inspired the movie “The Killing Fields,” died on Saturday at age 82, the New York Times and Newsday reported.

Schanberg, who worked for both newspapers in his career, gained international prominence for his reporting on the atrocities accompanying the communist takeover of Cambodia.

He suffered a heart attack earlier in the week and died on Saturday at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, New York, his wife, Jane Freiman, told Newsday.

His work helped to bring worldwide attention to the brutal genocide in Cambodia during the 1970s.

A foreign correspondent for the New York Times, Schanberg and Cambodian journalist Dith Pran stayed in the country in 1975 as other Western journalists and leading officials fled the capital of Phnom Penh. Both were captured and threatened with death, the New York Times noted.

Schanberg eventually was evacuated, and he returned to the United States, while Pran endured years of brutality as a prisoner in the country.

Schanberg’s writings about Pran’s ordeal inspired the 1984 movie, “The Killing Fields.” The actor playing Pran, Dr. Haing Ngor, won an Oscar for best supporting actor for the film. Sam Waterston portrayed Schanberg in the film.

Schanberg, hired as a copy boy at the New York Times in 1959, spent 26 years at the newspaper in roles that included metropolitan editor and a columnist.

He left the New York Times in 1985, after his column was discontinued, and joined Newsday, also in New York. He was a columnist and editor there for 10 years, Newsday reported.

8 Ways Smart People Act Stupid

2016-07-08-1468006516-5391518-8WaysSmartPeopleActStupidHP.jpg

It’s good to be smart. On the surface, being smart looks like easy living. But there’s another side to the story.

Intelligent people have a reputation for making dumb mistakes, especially in situations that require common sense. The simplicity of these situations and the abundant intelligence of those who tend to muck them up can be downright comical.

“Common sense is not so common.” -Voltaire

Scientists are finally beginning to understand why this happens. Shane Frederick at MIT was among the first to conduct research that explained why rational thinking and intelligence don’t tend to go hand in hand.

In his studies, Frederick gave people simple problems to solve, like this one:

A bat and ball cost a dollar and ten cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

Frederick found that some people have the tendency to confidently blurt out the wrong answer, stating that the ball costs ten cents. You, of course, knew that the correct answer is that the ball costs five cents, and you’re completely justified if you’re wondering if the, well, less-than-smart people were the ones blurting out the wrong answer.

Psychologists from James Madison University and the University of Toronto wondered the same thing. They gave similar tests of logic to hundreds of people and compared the accuracy of their answers to their levels of intelligence. The researchers found that smart people were more likely to blurt out the wrong answer because they actually make more mental mistakes when problem-solving.

Smart people are more prone to silly mistakes because of blind spots in how they use logic. These blind spots exist because smart people tend to be overconfident in their reasoning abilities. That is, they’re so used to being right and having quick answers that they don’t even realize when they’re blowing it by answering without thinking things through.

The dummies getting the bat-and-ball question wrong weren’t so dumb, either. When Frederick gave the question to students from Harvard, Princeton, and M.I.T., more than half of them got it wrong. Even students from some of the most prestigious universities in the world make stupid mistakes.

Perhaps the scariest thing about the errors that highly intelligent people make is how unaware they are of them. People of all levels of intelligence succumb to what’s called the “bias blind spot.” That is, we’re great at spotting other people’s mistakes and terrible at recognizing our own. The sillier the mistake, the harder it is for an intelligent person to accept that they’ve made it.

“I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.”
-Socrates

While it might seem like we don’t spend our days solving logic problems like the bat-and-ball question, the brain functions involved in solving these problems are the same ones we use in everyday thinking. Hence, the tendency to do stupid things follows smart people into the workplace. Consider some of the most common ways in which smart people manage to shoot themselves in the foot.

1. Smart people are overconfident. A lifetime of praise and pats on the back leads smart people to develop an unflappable faith in their intelligence and abilities. When you rack up accomplishments while people stroke your ego, it’s easy to expect that things will always go your way. But this is a dangerous expectation. Smart people often fail to recognize when they need help, and when they do recognize it, they tend to believe that no one else is capable of providing it.

2. They push people too hard. Smart people develop overachieving personalities because things come so easily to them. They simply don’t understand how hard some people have to work to accomplish the same things, and because of that, they push people too hard. Smart people set the bar too high, and when people take too long or don’t get things quite right, they assume it’s due to a lack of effort. So they push even harder and miss the opportunity to help others achieve the goals they’re so anxious for them to reach.

3. They always need to be right. It’s hard for anyone to graciously accept the fact that they’re wrong. It’s even harder for smart people because they grow so used to being right all the time that it becomes a part of their identity. For smart people, being wrong can feel like a personal attack, and being right, a necessity.

4. They lack emotional intelligence.
While intelligence (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ) don’t occur together in any meaningful way (Smart people, on average, have just as much EQ as everyone else), when a smart person lacks EQ, it’s painfully obvious. These high-IQ, low-EQ individuals see the world as a meritocracy. Achievements are all that matter, and people and emotions just get in the way. Which is a shame because TalentSmart research with more than a million people shows that–even among the upper echelons of IQ–the top performers are those with the highest EQs, as measured by an emotional intelligence test.

5. They give up when they fail. Have you ever watched a sporting event and seen the stunned look on the face of an athlete whom everyone expected to win, but didn’t? Smart people can easily fall into the trap of seeing failure as the end of the world because frequent success creates expectations that make failure hard to tolerate. People who have to work hard for what they achieve have plenty of practice learning how to deal with failure. They learn to embrace it because they know that failure is just a stepping stone to success.

6. They fail to develop grit. When things come really easy to you, it’s easy to see hard work as a negative (a sign that you don’t have what it takes). When smart people can’t complete something without a tremendous amount of effort, they tend to feel frustrated and embarrassed. This leads them to make the false assumption that if they can’t do something easily, there’s something wrong with them. As a result, smart people tend to move on to something else that affirms their sense of worth before they’ve put in the time to develop the grit they need to succeed at the highest possible level.

7. They multitask. Smart people think really quickly, which can make them impatient. They like to get several things going at once so that there isn’t any downtime. They think so quickly that, when they multitask, it feels like it’s working and they’re getting more done, but Stanford research shows that this isn’t the case. Not only does multitasking make you less productive, but people who multitask often because they think they’re good at it are actually worse at multitasking than people who prefer to do one thing at a time.

8. They have a hard time accepting feedback. Smart people tend to undervalue the opinions of others, which means they have trouble believing that anyone is qualified to give them useful feedback. Not only does this tendency hinder their growth and performance, it can lead to toxic relationships, both personally and professionally.

Bringing It All Together

To some, this post will read like I’m trashing smart people, but I’m not. Some of life’s greatest gifts, including high intelligence, can also come with challenges. If you aren’t willing to take an honest look at the whole picture, you’re selling yourself short. And that isn’t smart.

How do you see smart people acting stupid? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The Cincinnati Zoo: Part II, Repeating the Same Pattern of Crises Over and Over Again!

I wish fervently that what happened recently at the Cincinnati Zoo was the rare exception. Unfortunately, in my over 30 years of experience as a crisis consultant and university researcher, it’s not.

As we know, a three-year old child somehow slipped behind a barrier and fell into a gorilla enclosure. In order to save the child from harm, the gorilla was shot. Howls of protest over whether the animal had to be killed and calls for the parents to be charged with child endangerment were immediate.

What rankled me most of all was that in defending their actions, the spokesman for the zoo said that they’ve never had such an incident in over 38 years. Somehow, we were supposed to be comforted by this statistic. This completely overlooks the fact that a crisis is the worst time to spout statistics. Despite one’s good intentions and preparations, nothing prevented the unthinkable from occurring. Indeed, it just happened so it wasn’t impossible!

Sadly, what happened fits an all-too-general pattern that pertains to virtually all crises. First of all, somehow someone–in this case a young child–slips behind, breaks through, etc. a protective barrier. The longer that the barrier’s worked, the greater the belief that it will work indefinitely and therefore that it doesn’t need to be reviewed periodically and redesigned. This is especially the case since the barrier met “accepted standards.”

Second, little if any thought and preplanning is given to the “blame game.” In virtually all major crises, stakeholders of all kinds–the author included–come out the woodwork to assess and blame all of the parties involved. Thus, the Zoo blamed the parents and the parents blamed the Zoo. Animal rights groups blamed everyone, etc.

Third, it’s painfully obvious that the spokespersons for the Zoo received little if any training in Crisis Communications. If they had, then they never would have said that “It’s never happened before in 38 years,” or “The current barriers were adequate.” They would have said something like, “Please give us the time to examine the situation more carefully before we get back to you.”

Fourth, on a regular basis, the Zoo should have been examining worst-case scenarios of all kinds. A fundamental part of worst-case scenarios is the total collapse of all of the assumptions that one has been making as to why there won’t be a crisis: “The barriers are sufficient.” “We don’t need training in Crisis Communications.” “The blame game won’t happen, etc.” Thinking the unthinkable should have been a normal part of the everyday culture.

Does this mean that the Zoo should have anticipated and therefore planned for everything perfectly? Of course not! Perfection is not the standard in Crisis Management. It should have been doing what the best crisis-prepared organizations do. It should have been constantly expanding its thinking and thus preparations for all kinds of crises.

For instance, in the few hospitals where I’ve worked as a crisis consultant, realistic-looking dolls have been placed in maternity wards. The test is to see how far someone can get out of the ward holding the fake child in his or her hands. In some cases, they’ve gotten completely out of the hospital with no one questioning and thereby stopping them. Needless to say, the test is repeated again and again until procedures are tightened up such that one can’t make it by the first nurse’s station.

All zoos ought to be doing something similar. Why weren’t dolls or dummies used to test how easily young children could slip through the barriers to animal enclosures? Why weren’t tests conducted frequently and such that they were increasingly more difficult to pass?

Constantly thinking and testing for the unthinkable is the only protection we have against calamities. What happened should not only be a wakeup call for all zoos, but for all organizations.

ADHD? Who, Me?

2016-06-03-1464919926-5542961-ADHDwhome.png

Ok, let’s just say you’re reading this because you might have attention problems, as they’re sometimes called. Maybe you know someone who does. And maybe sometimes you wonder-if attention problems aren’t just part of the human condition. It’s a good question. In fact, it’s a common belief, in this fast-paced world, that everyone has attention problems.

I see the point: To some degree or other, everyone goes through periods where stress is exponential and focusing is hard.

But this is a whole ‘nother level of stress. People with ADHD live in stress more often, and it’s spills out into life around them. Repeated episodes of emotional distress build into wicked cycles, things fall apart, and havoc is wrecked, again. It’s the fall out of the Emotional Distress Syndrome of ADHD.

Imagine the proverbial snowball rolling downhill — and the snowball picks up all kinds of debris along the way. Branches, trees, small animals, abandoned buildings, other people’s entire lives… Excuse the messy metaphor, but, as you may know, this can be a messy, chaotic way to live.

No doubt, stress is everywhere. But contrary to popular belief, everyone in the world can’t claim to have ADHD. It’s more like 3 to 5 percent of the population, and that’s according to the most conservative of many estimates. The more liberal end of the spectrum says that 10 percent of us have this particular neurological condition.

So is it real, or what?

Spoiler alert: Yes. ADHD is real.

The research, especially in recent years, has made it quite clear that this constellation of symptoms is an inherited, neurological condition. But since I’m not a scientist, and since neuroscientists are probably learning something new about ADHD as I’m writing this, I won’t attempt a detailed explanation of the ADHD brain.

Instead, I’ll draw this picture in very broad strokes.

The brain of a person with ADHD may have a smaller-than-average prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that regulates planning, evaluating, delaying gratification, focusing, doing more than one thing at a time — all those processes we find so challenging. And the connection between the prefrontal cortex and the dopamine receptors appears not to be as efficient as it could be. (Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that controls the brain’s ability to get motivated and experience pleasure, among other nice things.) So, the “reward circuitry” of a person with ADHD may be interrupted, slowed down, otherwise less efficient.

Perhaps to compensate, the limbic system, the primeval part of the brain that perceives threat and acts on adrenaline-the fight, flight or freeze part-seems to be overactive in the ADHD brain. So the nervous, stressed, caveman-running-from-a-mastodon instinct is overactive. And the part that prioritizes and plans ahead is under-active.

That’s how I understand the science of ADHD.

And here’s my interpretive version: The prefrontal cortex of a person with ADHD cannot rest easily or often in the details of life. Because its reward circuitry is interrupted and/or incomplete, there’s no incentive for it to finish what it starts. Instead, it wanders around in search of something shiny, something to galvanize its attention. When it lights up or engages fully, its efficiency can quickly become obsessive. Adding a column of tax figures would not light it up. Working a wickedly difficult Sudoku puzzle just might.

How Does It Feel to Have ADHD?

As those who have lived with, worked with or fallen in love with someone diagnosed with ADHD know, there’s just something different about ADHD-ers. After two decades of observing myself and others, I’ve gotten a pretty clear picture of how it feels to live life with ADHD.

Different. Weird. Out of sync. People who don’t have ADHD, “regular” people, don’t seem to have trouble doing things that strike us as very, very difficult. That could be because at some point in their early to mid-twenties, their non-ADHD brains underwent a maturing process. So, if they simply focus on remembering a task, it’s likely to not get forgotten! (Can you imagine?)

Non-ADHD wisdom is full of trying harder, sucking it up, going back to the old drawing board, pulling yourself up by the bootstraps. These slogans can be very helpful, I hear. Unless you have ADHD-in which case your bootstraps snapped years ago, and you’re still trying to pull yourself up using that invention you almost-but-not-quite got around to patenting, the thing with the pulleys. If only you could remember where you put those drawings…

If you’re part of the three to five percent, your view of the world is skewed, from just about every vantage point. Organization, follow through, vision, clarity, communication — all just a little out of step with what you experience going on around you. You’re constantly thinking of what’s either behind or ahead of where you are right now, ping-ponging backward and forward in time. The ADHD brain seems to shift gears a few beats early. It has trouble settling down in the present, particularly if the present contains a lot of details. There’s a persistent restlessness, a neurological hum. You can’t always commit — to a conversation, a thought, a relationship. You want to commit, but you also feel compelled to fidget or fiddle or pace, just to keep your mind engaged. Someone asks Are you paying attention? You say of course. You hope you are, anyway.

Untreated, unmanaged ADHD is a quick path to neurological chaos.

Prognosis: Good News and Bad News
Now imagine that you not only have the inherited, genetic condition known as ADHD, but a few other strikes against you. Say you’re growing up in poverty, or with a weak family system, or in an educational system that doesn’t have time to understand how best to teach you. Or with mental illness or addiction — in your genes and/or your surroundings. Now the constant misplacing of keys or reading glasses, on top of everything else, can start to feel downright unmanageable. And those are just every day, private annoyances, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, your ADHD isn’t just about you. Other people are affected by the actions of your scattered brain. Maybe sometimes you’d like to live alone, in a vacuum, but it’s not possible. The short version is this: ADHD is no joke, and you ignore it at your peril. Untreated, unmanaged ADHD is a quick path to neurological chaos. It can be more than frustrating to go through life this way. The frustration can morph into serious discouragement. The discouragement can grow into a sense that life is a matter of unrelenting struggle.

But having ADHD can also be very stimulating. It can be fun. I mean it. Imagine a stone skipping across the surface of a lake, and now imagine being that stone! You can’t seem to get below the surface of the water, but what you’re doing feels close to flying, and somehow that heightened sensation feels more normal than risky. You may not know how to plan your day, but you do know how to entertain yourself. That’s a rare skill. Give yourself credit.

ADHD adults are constantly looking for stimulation, whether or not they do it consciously. This can drive their loved ones and bosses crazy, or impress them with out-of-the-box thinking or finding answers that others don’t.

Under the right circumstances, being one of the three to five percent can feel special. You’re a rare jewel, blessed with the ability to see the big picture, while others bog down in daily details. But I wouldn’t get too attached to the buzz you get from this particular feeling, as it tends to be fleeting. And more often, living with ADHD is a series of significant challenges.

So the truth is that there are strikes against you, and it does little good to ignore the truth. On the other hand, if that’s the only angle from which you see your ADHD, it will suck the life right out of you. What I’m saying is this: You have a serious responsibility to come to terms with your brain chemistry.

So how do you do that?

Knowledge is power.

It starts with a diagnosis.

And, we’ll talk about that in the next installment.

We Can No Longer Ignore Depression in Our Children

I was only a block away when the call came out. Although I was working traffic duty at the time, life and death-type incidents required anyone and everyone within the vicinity to respond. A 12-year-old with a gun threatening his mother definitely fitted within that realm.

Upon my arrival, things were not as life threatening as they were originally portrayed. The gun was secured, the 12-year-old calmly sitting on the couch, and the mother very much alive. No life had been lost, but the situation still needed addressing.

The solution? Well, the suspect offered that up for me himself.

“Just take me to jail,” he said. The calmness of his statement should have frightened me but having only just got out of the police academy I was still young and signs such as these I didn’t recognize.

As a cop who had too much paperwork and follow-up on my plate, the kid seemed to save me some time. A quick trip to the juvenile center and “my” problems were solved. It wasn’t until years later after starting to understand depression that the situation involving “his” problems began to bother me.

Depression is there, even if we don’t want to see it

I’ve had my share of dealing with depression, as have 14.8 million other Americans (approximately 6.7% of the population).

This number isn’t the scary part. It is reported that 50% of Americans with major depression fail to seek treatment for mental illness. This tells me the percentage of people suffering from depression is probably higher, but not calculated in the overall numbers as it goes unreported.

Just because we may not see it (or recognize it) does not mean depression isn’t there. According to an infographic put together by Healthline.com, the number of patients diagnosed with depression increases by approximately 20 percent each year. That’s a staggering number.

Depression is no longer taboo

Okay, so depression is still considered by some to be taboo, but we have made great strides over the last decade to break that. People seem to be more willing to openly discuss their own battles with depression, and those who already have a spotlight on them have helped.

Celebrities and other influencers have actually made it easier for us to discuss depression. I don’t think any of us will forget about Robin Williams and his battle with depression. His suicide in 2014 kicked off a firestorm of discussion about myths and misconceptions that are normally tagged with depression.

It is this “commercialization” of depression that has made it easier to discuss it in society. Doctor Richard E. Toney, a psychotherapist from Texas, agrees.

“Since it has been more commercialized in the past 10 years, people are more comfortable with communicating about how they feel,” says Toney. “Within American Society, there has been an increase in television shows, commercial and other social media platforms that discuss depression.”

Depression in adults is a topic that while still taboo, has become easier to discuss over the last few years. But what about our kids?

Time to pay attention to the next generation

While talking about depression is now acceptable, we always go down a slippery slope when talking about kids’ depression. Especially other people’s children. As a parent, our natural tendency is to protect our children, even to the point where we involuntarily excuse certain behaviors.

While talking about depression is more commonplace, we first need to get to the point where we recognize it exists in children, then acknowledge it when we see those signs.

According to Cole Rucker, CEO of teen depression rehab center Paradigm New York, he says signs are often there but we fail to acknowledge them. “Parents need to trust their instincts. If they feel there is a problem, then they need to address it.” He adds that we often dismiss the early warning signs which can lead to the depression getting worse.

So what are the signs? While not an inclusive list, WebMD suggests the following:

• Irritability or anger.
• Continuous feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
• Social withdrawal.
• Increased sensitivity to rejection.
• Changes in appetite — either increased or decreased.
• Changes in sleep — sleeplessness or excessive sleep.
• Vocal outbursts or crying.

What can we do?

Unfortunately, I’m not a doctor. I can only tell you my experiences with depression and hopefully point you towards the fact that it’s there. There are many online resources out there which may help, as well as actual real life doctors who you can consult with (yes, there is more to life than just the internet).

The point is that you must do something. As parents, putting our heads in the sand is not a viable option. One of the best things to do, but often the toughest from a parenting standpoint, is to take your child in for an evaluation where a specialist can make an assessment. “An assessment will determine if it really is a depressive disorder or if another disorder better represents what is going on,” says Stephen Hupp, PhD, professor of Clinical Child and School Psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Once you have a diagnosis, treatment is the obvious next step and starts within the child’s home.

“Children need to learn coping mechanisms for the feelings and symptoms of depression,” says Clinical Psychologist Dr. John Mayer. In his book Family Fit, he talks about how parents can create a lifestyle for their families that help them cope with emotions of all kinds, including depression.

With regard to my “suspect” from years ago, I have no idea how his story ended up. He would be about 30 years old now and I remember his face every time I see warning signs in other kids. I just wish I had known then what I know now.

Brave Black Woman Stands Alone Against Hundreds Of Neo-Nazis

All it takes is one brave soul to stand up against hate.

An image going viral around the world shows 42-year-old Tess Asplund standing defiant, with a fist raised, against hundreds of neo-Nazis marching through the streets of Borlänge, Sweden, on Sunday.

“It was an impulse. I was so angry, I just went out into the street,” Asplund told the Guardian. “I was thinking: ‘hell no, they can’t march here!’ I had this adrenaline. No Nazi is going to march here, it’s not okay.”

The paper reported that Asplund stands just 5’2″ and weighs about 110 pounds — yet she stood in the path of some 300 marching neo-Nazis, one of whom shoved her out of the way.

She’s being praised across social media for her courage.

Asplund told a local radio station that she raised her fist in a gesture she had seen Nelson Mandela use, according to The Local website.

Photographer David Lagerlöf, who captured the image above, described the moment.

“These are the [Nordic Resistance Movement’s] leadership figures slowly walking towards her, and it looks like hers and the leader’s eyes meet, that they are staring at each other,” he told the TT newswire, according to The Local. “When they are quite close to each other the police come along and push her away.”

In video of the incident posted on YouTube, another protester is seen in the video behind Asplund, clapping and chanting, but he is shoved by someone wearing a vest that identifies him as a member of a neo-Nazi media organization.

As The Local notes, Asplund is being compared on social media to a Swedish woman in 1985 who was also photographed standing up to neo-Nazis. Instead of raising a fist, she whacked one marcher right on his skinhead with her handbag:

Asplund told The Independent that the neo-Nazis should have been barred from marching.

Of course they shouldn’t be allowed to march in the first place. They are Nazis,” she told the paper. “They are spreading hate. They want a white area. If they got control of the country they would kick me out, kick my family out.”

Live Life like a Glider
Soar up in the air
Be the co-director
Go from here to there …

Wrap your straps on tightly
Keep your wits about
And as you view the scenery
Do watch every route …

For every push and pull
Will change the way you flow
Thus use your inner wisdom
To plan where you might go …

But always do remember
That no one ever stays
So do enjoy the journey
And learn along the way …

Mom Of Special Needs Child Thanks Target For ‘Showing Acceptance Of Everyone’

Earlier this year, Target made a widely lauded announcement: The retailer vowed to stock almost all of its U.S. stores with at least one Caroline’s Cart — a shopping cart designed for people with special needs.

The cart, said Target at the time, could “be a game changer for families,” allowing them to shop without having to simultaneously maneuver a cart and a wheelchair.

This week, a Utah mom is sharing how Target’s decision has positively impacted her life.

In a post on Facebook, Rebecca Bell from St. George explains how Target’s Caroline’s Carts have enabled her daughter, Emma, to “participate in one more aspect of life.”

“Target, I’m sorry that all the silly negativity surrounding your toilets has caused this awesomeness to be overlooked,” Bell wrote, referring to the company’s recent decision to make its restrooms transgender-friendly. “This is a game changer for families like mine. It means I can shop without having to push a cart and pull a wheel chair. It means my little girl can participate in one more aspect of life. We are beyond excited about it.”

Caroline’s Cart is a shopping cart with an extra-large, forward-facing seat which can accommodate both children and adults. It was created by Alabama couple Drew Ann and David Long for their special needs daughter, Caroline, who uses a wheelchair.

The idea, said Drew Ann, had come to her one day while shopping for groceries with Caroline and her toddler son.

“I remember so desperately struggling with a wheelchair, a 2-year-old and a shopping cart,” Drew Ann said in a video on Caroline Cart’s site. “I remember, I thought, ‘What would help me?’”

And so, the idea for the special cart was born.

“Our goal is to enable special needs children to more easily be included in their family’s every-day life by making Caroline’s Cart available at retailers across the country,” said Drew Ann in 2011“David and I made a commitment that this cart was going to happen — parents and caregivers of disabled children should have access to this.”

Caroline’s Carts can be found in several stores around the country, including some Dillons, Kroger, Safeway, Hy-Vee, Busch’s, Food Lion and Trader Joe’s outlets. Find out which stores in your state have Caroline’s Carts here

The Force of Beauty

The Force of Beauty

The market for commercial beauty products exploded in Third Republic France, with a proliferation of goods promising to erase female imperfections and perpetuate an aesthetic of femininity that conveyed health and respectability. While the industry’s meteoric growth helped to codify conventional standards of womanhood, The Force of Beauty goes beyond the narrative of beauty culture as a tool for sociopolitical subjugation to show how it also targeted women as important consumers in major markets and created new avenues by which they could express their identities and challenge or reinforce gender norms. As cosmetics companies and cultural media, from magazines to novels to cinema, urged women to aspire to commercial standards of female perfection, beauty evolved as a goal to be pursued rather than a biological inheritance. The products and techniques that enabled women to embody society’s feminine ideal also taught them how to fashion their bodies into objects of desire and thus offered a subversive tool of self-expression. Holly Grout explores attempts by commercial beauty culture to reconcile a standard of respectability with female sexuality, as well as its efforts to position French women within the global phenomenon of changing views on modern womanhood. Grout draws on a wide range of primary sources-hygiene manuals, professional and legal debates about the right to fabricate and distribute “medicines,” advertisements for beauty products, and contemporary fiction and works of art-to explore how French women navigated changing views on femininity. Her seamless integration of gender studies with business history, aesthetics, and the history of medicine results in a textured and complex study of the relationship between the politics of womanhood and the politics of beauty.

Chapters in this book review the remarkable advances in the field of zinc biology over the last decade. Zinc is essential for life, in particular for growth and development, through its role in hundreds of zinc enzymes and thousands of zinc proteins. Its catalytic, structural, and regulatory functions in these proteins impact metabolism, gene expression, and signal transduction, including neurotransmission. Among the micronutrients, zinc may rank with iron as to its importance for public health. The topics covered range from single molecules to cells and to whole organisms: the chemistry, design, and application of fluorophores for the determination of cellular zinc; the role of zinc in proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis of cells; proteins that transport, sense, and distribute zinc and together form a cellular homeostatic system; the coordination chemistry of zinc in metalloproteins; the role of zinc in the brain as a neuromodulator/transmitter; the dependence of the immune system on zinc; zinc homeostasis in the whole human body. The book should be of interest to anybody seeking an up-to-date account of biological research on zinc, in particular researchers and teachers in the areas of bioinorganic chemistry, biological sciences, nutrition, and medicine in relation to mineral metabolism in health and disease.

Bernie Blew It: He Sold Out Instead of Confronting Clinton

Bernie blew it. By embracing rather than confronting Hillary Clinton, Sen. Sanders fell into the trap of sellout mainstream politics, improving his personal brand as an appealing but ultimately non-threatening advocate for the downtrodden while studiously avoiding any suggestion that the smiley-faced woman standing next to him is deeply complicit in Wall Street’s rape of the nation.

In Tuesday’s debate he pointedly ignored the Clinton family’s role in deregulating Wall Street, and in doing so he allowed Hillary Clinton to cast gun regulation as the key issue that divides her from him. Forgotten was Bill Clinton’s selection of Goldman Sachs honcho Robert Rubin to be his treasury secretary, an appointee who with President Clinton’s complicity presided over the dismantling of New Deal limits on financial greed.

The Clinton family tradition of sucking up to Wall Street is why Hillary and Bill and the foundation their daughter heads have been rewarded with millions in lecture fees and donations that are the basis of Hillary’s rags-to-riches fairy tale. When she says she wants every child to have the opportunity that her grandchild has, that presupposes a father set up in the hedge fund business by Goldman Sachs chairman and Clinton buddy Lloyd Blankfein.

Yes, Bernie Sanders has an immensely honorable record of waging the good fight for struggling Americans. On issues of economic justice, he is second to none, but that makes his stumble in this debate so depressing. I have long admired the man, but his failure to directly hold the Democratic leadership accountable for the bipartisan hollowing out of the American workforce was disappointing. The destruction of the hardworking, decently paid middle class was abetted by lousy trade deals like NAFTA and more recently the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which Hillary Clinton called the “gold standard” until it became politically inconvenient to insist on that absurdity.

Sanders’ eagerness to forgive Clinton for any malfeasance in her email scandal was the debate’s most celebrated but disgraceful moment. Ignoring her outrageous hypocrisy in endorsing the government’s right to read the personal emails of everyone in the world, including the leaders of Germany and Brazil, but not her own, Sanders absolved the former secretary of state of the kinds of security breaches that have put lower-level government workers in prison. “Let me say this,” Sanders declared as he cut into the applause for Clinton’s dismissal of the email controversy as simply partisan contrivance. “Let me say … something that may not be great politics. But I think the secretary is right, and that is that the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails!” Of course it was great politics, creating a kumbaya moment among the assembled Democrats, with an appreciative Clinton murmuring, “Thank you. Me, too. Me, too.” Suddenly Sanders had morphed into a Tony Blair complement to the Margaret Thatcher wannabe standing next to him.

Sanders remains proud of his opposition to the Patriot Act–still supported by Clinton–which authorized mass surveillance by the National Security Agency. So why didn’t he point out the hypocrisy of a Cabinet member not trusting the government with her personal emails but feeling perfectly fine about the most intimate private data of the rest of us being subject to a vast and secret system of government spying? Spying that Clinton knew all about, but that was concealed from the American public until it was revealed by a brave whistleblower whom Clinton wants to imprison.

We learned of the domestic spying, since limited by an act of Congress, only through the disclosures of Edward Snowden, whose motives and patriotism Clinton continues to castigate. Repeating her persistent denigration of a young man who served the needs of a democracy as Clinton so abjectly betrayed our Constitution, Clinton stated that Snowden must come back and “face the music.” Once again, as she has done repeatedly, Clinton falsely claimed that Snowden could have sought whistleblower protection when she should know that such protection is only for government employees, not a contractor as Snowden was. And she again smeared Snowden for taking refuge in Russia, as if that was his choice rather than the result of the State Department stripping his passport while he was in transit at the Moscow airport.

One should have no expectation that Clinton will be anything but deceitful in beating the drum for the “impostures of pretended patriotism” that George Washington warned about in his farewell address. Her hawkishness is ingrained, and the smug satisfaction she brings to an appraisal of the wreckage she has encouraged in Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and Syria was on full display during the debate’s painfully shallow consideration of foreign policy choices.

That the former Goldwater Girl is a devotee of peace through bombing is not news, but her unctuous satisfaction with the results of her warmongering tenure as secretary of state is a depressing harbinger of worldwide chaos should she be elected president. And don’t lecture me about the future of a Supreme Court in the hands of someone who would hang Edward Snowden if she could work it for the polls. Et tu, Bernie?

WATCH: Tapping Into the Seventh Step Prayer

I believe one of the greatest things we can be is useful. Years ago, while working with folks struggling with addiction, I was introduced to the 12 Steps, which provide a great framework for positive change. I love the line from this prayer that says, “I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows.” That kinda sums up why I do what I do — to help folks remove those things that block them from doing more good for themselves and others. Whatever your spiritual beliefs may be, I hope you will find this useful.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

For EFT with kids, please visit: www.TheWizardsWish.com.
